• Pall Rings – Types & It’s Specifications?

Derived from Raschig rings, pall rings are used in applications involving the transfer of gas and liquid. They are a form of random packaging.

Pall Rings

Pall rings are designed to maintain uniformity in distribution and resist the pressure against wall channel inclination. It has many contours and crevices designed to control gas and liquid transfer rates.

Depending upon the material (plastic, ceramic and metal) used, pall rings are classified into three types with different applications. Let’s look at what pall rings are, their various types and specifications in this blog.

What are Pall Rings?

Pall rings are an improved industry-standard packaging form of Raschig ring. These rings are well established and globally distributed bases for transferring gas and liquid. The structure of pall rings is mechanically robust and deep packed.

Pall rings are used in areas where separation and absorption of gas and liquid are mandatory. Additionally, these rings play a vital role in absorption and steam stripping, quench tower, direct contact cooling, tower packing, etc.

Types of Pall Rings

Pall rings are classified into the following types depending on the material used. They are available in various materials and designed in varying shapes to improve their performance.

  • Plastic Pall Rings

  • Plastic pall rings are used in gas and liquid separator applications. They are made up of each polypropylene, Polyethylene, RPP, PVDF, PVC, and CPVC material with different shapes. Two levels of windows are fitted into the plastic cylinder to improve efficiency. They are mechanically robust and less sensitive to liquid distribution. Their performant nature makes them popular in packaging services.

Specifications of Plastic Pall Rings

  • Material:Polypropylene, Polyethylene, RPP, PVDF, PVC, and CPVC
  • Diameter:38 mm, 50 mm and 80 mm.
  • Thickness:4 mm, 5 mm and 8 mm.
  • Metal Pall Rings

  • Metal Pall Rings are used in quench towers, direct contact cooling applications, atmospheric pressure separation, absorption applications, and steam stripping applications. They comprise carbon steel and galvanized steel with two layers of windows on the cylinder wall and five ligules for axial mixing.

Specifications of Metal Pall Rings

  • Material:Carbon steel and galvanized steel
  • Diameter:38 mm, 50 mm and 80 mm.
  • Thickness:4 mm, 5 mm and 8 mm.
  • Ceramic Pall Rings

  • Ceramic Pall Rings are classical random packaging used for separating, absorbing, and cooling services. It has two layers of windows in ceramic cylinder walls with five ligules designed in a manner that improves the distribution of gas and liquid. These rings also provide isolation in classical packaging.

Specifications of ceramic pall ring

  • Material:Ceramic.
  • Diameter:38 mm, 50 mm and 80 mm.
  • Thickness:4 mm, 5 mm and 8 mm.

Pall Rings Applications

For several years Raschig rings have been used for the packaging of gas and liquid in order to prevent loss. Raschig rings had a complex design with a tiny blade on top and bottom of the cylindrical wall. In addition, the window had an eight-layered rectangular small wall.

Pall rings with two layers of windows in the cylinder wall improve the packaging efficiency of large flows and low resistance. They facilitate high separation while transferring gas and liquid. Thus, pall rings are more widely used as compared to Raschig rings due to their high packaging volume and pressure reduction ratio.
